AFC U-16 C’ship: Kuwait 0-3 DPR Korea

Bangkok: Han Kwang-song scored one and set-up another as DPR Korea climbed to the top of Group C after a comfortable 3-0 win over Kuwait in their AFC U-16 Championship opener at Muangthong Stadium on Sunday.

Han opened the scoring for the 2010 champions from the penalty spot in the fifth minute before teeing up Jong Chang-bom to double the lead in the 72nd minute.
And midfielder Choe Song-hyok added a third in the 82nd minute to complete a disappointing evening for Kuwait, who will now have to re-group for the second group game against Nepal on Tuesday.
“Our young players tried to show their full talent, but did not perform at their best. I am satisfied with the score, but we can play better,” said DPR Korea coach Yon Kwang-mu.
“Han is one of our best attacking players and he will show his talent in the future games. He had a minor injury, nothing serious, so I took him off to save him for the Uzbekistan game on Tuesday.”
DPR Korea got off to the best possible start when striker Han was hacked down inside the area by Kuwaiti captain Shabaib Al Khaldi, and after Malaysian referee Nagor Amir Noor Mohamed had pointed to the spot, the striker coolly dispatched the penalty low to the bottom left of goalkeeper Omar Mohammad.
The 2010 champions continued to dominate the opening stages, but 2012 quarter-finalists Kuwait had a penalty call of their own turned down by Malaysian official in the 22nd minute fouling a foul on forward Khaled Al Enezi.
DPR Korea, though, went soon back on the attack and Park Yong-gwan could have added a second on 25 minutes, but after skipping past defender Meshal Al Enezi, the midfielder fired his powerful right-footed drive directly at goalkeeper Mohammad.
Kuwait did start to come back into the game in the closing stages of the first half and 10 minutes before the break the lively Khaled Al Enezi beat defender Kim Wi-song for pace but failed to get enough behind his shot to steer the ball past DPR Korea goalkeeper Ri Chol-song.
DPR Korea then thought they had doubled their lead in the 39th minute only for Han’s strike to be ruled offside by the assistant referee.
But as the half drew to a close it was Kuwait who were on top and Khaled Al Enezi again found himself with a sight of goal when he was beautifully played through by defender Abdalla Al Booshy, but the powerful frontman scuffed his shot and gave Ri an easy save.
DPR Korea had the better of the opening stages of the second half and the dangerous Han found himself through on goal once more in the 53rd minutes only for Mohammad to narrow the angle well and block his goalbound effort.
And Mohammad again kept his side within touching distance by again denying Han after the striker had broken through the Kuwaiti defence as DPR Korea continued to dominate despite creating little in terms of clear-cut chances.
But the game was effectively over as a contest seconds later when Park chipped the ball to Han inside the area and the striker squared the ball for strike partner Jong to tap home in the 73rd minute.
Han was then substituted in the 81st minute, but DPR Korea showed no sign of missing their talisman and just 60 seconds later Choe skipped past Al Khaldi and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards out to seal the win.
“We played a good game, but we made some mistakes. This is normal because we are a young team,” said Kuwait coach Ibrahim Al Shammari.
“We created chances, but ended up losing 3-0.”
