People′s Sports Contest in DPRK

Pyongyang, October 19 (KCNA) — The 12th People’s Sports Contest is now going on in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, divided into two groups of professionals and amateurs.

The contest draws deep public attention for the participation of many experienced and hopeful athletes of the country, including world and Asian champions and Olympic gold medalists, and mass sports competitions with a main stress put on popular events.

The football matches of sports teams take place atKim Il SungStadium. The matches bring together 17 men’s and 16 women’s teams, selected in the regional preliminaries held in August-September.

Such events as basketball, volleyball, table-tennis and boxing are held at Pyongyang Indoor Stadium and gymnasiums in Chongchun Street here.

The People’s Sports Contest is the largest all-round sports meet in the DPRK, which involves many sports athletes and amateurs.

The first contest was held in Juche 49 (1960).
