DPR Korea advanced to the semi-finals of the AFC U-19 Championship after edging out Japan 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Friday’s quarter-final at Wunna Theikdi Stadium.

With chances at a premium during a hard-fought contest, Kim Kuk-chol’s header on 37 minutes appeared to have secured victory for the Koreans only for Japan captain Takumi Minamino to equalise with eight minutes remaining from the spot.
But with goalkeeper Cha Jong-hun then saving the decisive penalty from the same player in the shootout, three-time champions DPR Korea will now travel to Yangon ahead of Monday’s semi-finals, with An Ye-gun’s side also securing a return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup next year for their third appearance at the finals.
Both teams made just one change from their final group stage ties on Tuesday with Japan forward Ado Onaiwu getting his first start in place of Kohya Kitagawa, while Jon Kum-dong returned to DPR Korea’s backline after missing out against Oman and Iraq.
And it was the Koreans who almost opened the match in explosive fashion as Kim Yu-song forced his way into the penalty area in the second minute only to see his toe-poked effort blocked by a spread-eagled jumping block from Japan goalkeeper Kosuke Nakamura.
The danger was not averted, though, as the rebound fell to Jin Il-sok, but the forward’s low shot was stopped this time by a more orthodox low save from Nakamura, diving low to his right.
Japan’s riposte nearly resulted in the opener, however, as on 11 minutes Yosuke Ideguchi’s free-kick from 25-yards-out swerved around the DPR Korea wall and clattered the foot of the right-hand post with custodian Cha Jong-hun beaten.
Onaiwu then missed two good chances after being played in by first Shota Kaneko and later Takumi Minamino as Japan enjoyed the lion’s share of possession.
Nakamura was then called into action once again in spectacular style after the half-hour mark as he pulled off an outstanding reaction save from Kang Nam-gwon’s shot from just 10 yards out following a free-kick that was not dealt with by the Japan defence.
But the warning went unheeded and the subsequent corner caused panic again amongst the blue-clad ranks, with the ball eventually coming out to Kang on the right flank and the midfielder’s cross found Kim Kuk-chol at the back-post to head home.
Japan coach Masakazu Suzuki freshened up his front line at half-time in an attempt to restore parity with Kitagawa coming on to replace Onaiwu.
Despite the switch in attack, the Samurai Blue struggled to penetrate the Korean backline until the 72nd minute as Ideguchi’s free-kick found a leaping Kaneko who turned his header onto the post, with Minamino unable to reach the rebound as it rolled along the six-yard box.
But with eight minutes remaining, tricky winger Kaneko danced into the penalty area from the left-flank and had his feet taken out from under him as he looked to pull the trigger.
And Minamino duly punished the infraction in ruthless fashion, slamming the resulting penalty-kick past Cha into the bottom left-hand corner to draw the sides level.
The remaining minutes of regulation time, nor the additional half-hour of extra-time, could bring further changes to the score line and the match went to penalties.
The first eight spot-kicks were a veritable penalty-taking clinic with both sides tied 4-4 going into the decisive round.
But after Jo Sol-song blasted home their fifth kick to extend their perfect record, Minamino’s effort was saved by a flying save to his right from Cha to seal victory and break Japan hearts.

AFC U-19 Championship QF: Japan v DPR Korea preview

Nay Pyi Taw: Teamwork is the key to victory insists Japan coach Masakazu Suzuki ahead of their AFC U-19 quarter-final showdown with three-time champions DPR Korea at Wunna Theikdi Stadium on Friday.
Japan, who are hoping to avoid a fourth consecutive quarter-final elimination at this tournament, topped Group C in impressive fashion after bouncing back from an opening defeat against China to pick up consecutive wins over Vietnam and defending champions Korea Republic.
And despite star forward Takumi Minamino being the outstanding player for Japan thus far, Suzuki is adamant that should his side secure a place in the semi-final it will take every player on the field, not just the Cerezo Osaka star.
“This team has been playing together for over a year and a half now, and it is their chemistry and togetherness that has got them here, even throughout tough times,” said Suzuki, under whom Minamino scored three goals in three games in the tournament’s group stages.
“Even though Minamino is important, we try not to rely on him too much and we try to score from every position, not just him, the other strikers and attacking midfielders can make goals too.
“That was the key to winning this group; they did not give up as a team and kept playing together until the last whistle. This will be the key to winning against DPR Korea and that will be the key to ending our bad run of results at this competition.”
As well as a place in the semi-finals, Japan seek a return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time since 2007 when they reached the Round of 16. And the ticket for the tournament next year in New Zealand earned by the final four teams is certainly something on Suzuki’s mind.
“It’s one of the goals of me and my players to qualify for the World Cup, I want the players to experience the opportunity to play in that tournament as well,” he added.
DPR Korea are appearing in their third AFC U-19 Championship quarter-final in the last four editions of the tournament having finished second in Group D behind Qatar, while victory on Sunday would secure a return to the semi-finals for the first time since 2010, a tournament they went on to win.
“We came through a very difficult group and now we have another very tough opponent in Japan in what is a must-win game for us,” said DPR Korea coach An Ye-gun.
“Japan have many good individually skilled players, like Minamino who has obviously got a lot of ability, but despite his talent he cannot operate well without his team, so we will focus on shutting them down as a team, not just focusing on individuals.
“We have to focus on being mentally and physically stronger than our opponents and impose our own game in the tie; that will be the key to success.”
DPR Korea go into the knockout stage as one of the team’s in the final eight with the worst goal difference from the group stages, alongside hosts Myanmar, but An is convinced the quarter-finals represent a clean slate for his side.
“The first two matches in the group stage were difficult games and we were not physically recovered from our travel from DPR Korea,” he said.
“The third game against Iraq, though, was a must-win and by that point the players were mentally and physically prepared and they got the result we needed.
“We will be fully ready for tomorrow’s game.”

THE national Under-19 football team faced a 6-0 beating at the hands of North Korea in their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship qualifier opener yesterday.
Brunei managed to keep the game goalless before giving a penalty away in the 21st minute, which saw North Korea’s Ro Myong Song put his team in front 1-0 at the Thai Japanese Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Three more goals were then added in the first half by So Jong Hyok (23rd minute), Kim Chol Min (31st) and Choe Song Il (39th) who was awarded the match’s most valuable player.

Six of the best second placed sides and hosts Myanmar will also make it through.
